Joseph Nevin (Joey)
President and Founder
Joseph Nevin is the Founder of HOPES and currently serves as the Head Lifeguard (TA) at the Kawamoto Swim Stadium in Hilo. His leadership is rooted in a lifelong commitment to water safety, public service, and the unique cultural and environmental responsibility that comes with caring for Hawaiʻi’s aquatic spaces.
Joseph’s connection to the water began early. A champion swimmer, dedicated water polo player, and white water rapid guide he has spent most of his life in and around pools and open water. Hawaiʻi has long been a central part of that journey—he visited regularly throughout his life before permanently relocating in 2017, drawn by both the ocean and the opportunity to serve the community he loves.
Professionally, Joseph brings a rare combination of aquatic expertise, emergency response training, and operational leadership. He is a certified Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor (WSI), and holds current CPR and First Aid certifications. His background also includes formal Emergency Medical Technician training and years of experience as an EMT and ambulance driver, giving him a calm, disciplined approach to risk management and emergency response.
In addition to his lifeguarding career, Joseph has extensive experience in facilities management, operations, and team leadership. He has overseen large residential properties, managed complex maintenance projects, and led teams responsible for safety, compliance, and long-term planning. This operational foundation informs HOPES’ practical, systems-based approach to aquatic safety and community programs.
HOPES was founded to reflect Joseph’s belief that water safety is not optional—it is a shared responsibility, especially in island communities where the ocean and pools are central to daily life. His vision for HOPES is grounded in education, prevention, and respect for Hawaiʻi’s people and waters, ensuring that access to aquatic spaces is paired with the knowledge and stewardship required to keep communities safe.
